A few weeks ago I went to Istanbul and was amazed at the changes since my last visit twenty years ago. The sun shone, the Bosphorus sparkled, everyone was super friendly, and it was magical…
I loved the subtle shades and patterns of the tiles in the blue mosque, and also in the Topkapi palace.
The huge cavernous space of the Hagia Sofia was incredible, and I especially admired the Byzantine mozaics that had been partially uncovered under the Ottoman painting of the interiors.

Really love the skyline, perfectly simple but evocative. After struggling to sketch Greek landscape and harbours last week I realise a lot of editing is required and a better eye for compostion (which you have!). I look at a scene and its just so chaotic I don’t know where to start. Again you’ve shown me less is more…
Thanks! You always say the right things…
Love the skyline too, the watercolour makes the most of the simple outline, and evokes the light of the Bosphorus too while we’re at it. And the mosque interior is even lovelier – funny how it works well for a blog, since the drawing is revealed as you scroll down. Love how the lights look like your signature calligraphic style.
Thanks for your comment, I’d never considered the scrolling down aspect of the tall images, but you’re right! I might try more of these…
